When you think of an expedition vehicle, what comes to mind? Many people conjure up an image of a basic 4×4 vehicle sporting a bare-boned camper that requires you to rough it out in the middle of the desert. Very rarely does anyone expect to be bathed in luxury on an overlanding journey.
Well, “luxurious” and “overlanding” can belong in the same sentence thanks to the EarthRoamer.
What is the EarthRoamer?
Described as “the ultimate adventure vehicle” by the private Colorado-based company that builds them, the EarthRoamer is a Ford F-550 Lariat or a Ford F-750 King Ranch carrying a luxurious camper. It’s designed to conquer any kind of territory while keeping the driver and passengers as comfortable as possible.
The latest EarthRoamer comes in two different models: the XV-LTS and the XV-HD.
Although the XV-LTS is the more compact model of the two, it’s anything but basic. With a starting price of a whopping $438,000, the on-road/off-road vehicle is solar and battery powered, can hold up to 90 gallons of water, and has a diesel tank big enough to last 900 miles. It carries a well-built one-piece camper loaded with luxurious features, such as a king-size memory foam bed, touch faucets, and a pop-out exterior kitchen for barbecuing.
The XV-HD is a bigger and beefier version of the XV-LTS. It offers more space in the camper and greater fuel, water, solar, and battery capacities. Its massive water and fuel tanks allows it to carry up to 250 gallons of water and 115 gallons of diesel. Although powered by the same engine as the one found in the XV-LTS, this model is 6’ longer and can haul nearly twice as much weight. Some of its standard interior features include heated floors, a washer and dryer, and a lithium battery bank. For a starting price of $1.5 million, you can get a custom-built EarthRoamer XV-HD of your own.
Ford Components in the EarthRoamer XV-LTS & XV-HD
When Ford overhauled its Super Duty trucks for the 2017 lineup, EarthRoamer was so impressed with the new features that they picked the F-550 to be the driving force behind their new XV-LTS. They also upgraded their XV-HD chassis from an F-650 to an F-750.
The F-550 4WD chassis is available in a Crew Cab or Super Cab body style and its Lariat trim level offers a whole lot of attractive features, including heated leather seats, an extensive instrument panel, and plenty of leg room.
The XV-HD’s King Ranch trim level offers a whole lot of comfort with a saddle-quality leather interior, a heated steering wheel, and ambient lighting.

A Ford 6.7L turbo diesel V8 engine powers both chassis and delivers best-in-class 330HP and 750 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to haul serious weight.
If you’re worried about the great outdoors banging up your pricey EarthRoamer, you shouldn’t be. The high-strength military-grade aluminum alloy body on both Ford bodies is strong yet lightweight enough to provide an even greater towing capacity than usual and withstand even the harshest climates.
